Ready for the Weekend: it all started with the Duchess of York

I recently saw the Bazar behind the scenes footage from a photo shoot featuring Sarah who was the Duchess of York.  The visual cues connecting the image and scene to the 2006 film Marie Antoinette are obvious.   While one might ponder the deeper meaning of aligning herself with the tragic queen, I was taken by the...cakes and pastries!

I have an occasion to bake for this week and I have been searching far and wide for excellent cake recipes.  (If you have some you should send them to me!)  Last night Sara was kind enough to share a chocolate cake recipe on her blog that sounds divine, so I may have to try that!  So I double checked on the styles and cakes from the 2006 film.

The amazing pastries and confections were created just for the filming by the infamous Laduree bakery in Paris.  Sadly, they do not have a shop near me, but they do feature many of their desserts on the website.  They offer the Marie Antoinette tribute cake, which was featured in the film, and smaller bites. yum...just yum...

I would love to know the price that one of these cakes go for!

Clearly as delicious as lovely.

Have a great weekend, I will be dreaming of cake and champagne!

about the pics of Sarah i am not sure... i think the whole scene would fit better to a younger lady or girl.. but it looks really familiar to the filmpicture, you have a very good eye for such agreements; my compliments.

  7. I do think the Royal Family would have liked Sarah to end up in the Conciergerie in Paris like Marie Antoinette did! I sort of feel the woman has no shame but .... as for Laudree and their cakes - now they are sinful too! LOL

  8. The woman is a complete mess, but, oohh the cakes! Marie Antoinette, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, always makes me crave naughty foods :)

  9. I completely agree!

And everytime I go to a good french 'boulangerie' I feel in Marie Antoinette's movie, all surrounded by pink cakes and 'macarons' of all colors.

    Nice post :)

I know very little about Sarah Ferguson except that she spent a lot of time in the tabloids when I was a young girl. I do happen to agree with maren that the scene is beautifully antoinette, but would have suited a woman half her age. Maybe it's just the pink frills....

A rumour that I have not been able to check out yet: Fergie's daughters wore their crazy hats to piss off the rest of the family because their mother was not invited to the wedding.

If you are ever in Ithaca for some reason, Ithaca Bakery/Collegetown Bagels has some pretty little cakes, but if you're not into the whole general public scene, Sarah's Patisserie has some incredibly divine creations.

  11. @maren, @box5angel & @Heidilea I compeltly see what you are saying about the frills and overall look of the shoot. It reminds me of one of Marie Antoinette's little fashion rules, no pink after 30! Although pink can be done tastefully after 30 for sure!

@Anne Boleyn, @bittersweet, @Anabel I found a little Macaron Cafe in NY Saturday and just HAD to pick up a box of assorted treats. I do not regret it. Plus you just feel so posh strutting around the city with your fancy pastries!

  12. @Princess Gabriella thank you!! :o) We all need daily doses of pretty things!

@SweetHarvestMoon same here, I always end up watching it when I am cleaning or spring cleaning. It just puts me in that 'pretty & fabulous' frame of mind!

@Meghann LittleStudio I know. No wonder corsets were so handy back then ;)

  13. Your blog is always a pleasure to read and see. Always thought provoking. The pictures are great. I think Sarah looks beautiful, pink and all. She lived through it all and is holding her head up. She and Marie have that in common. Marie went through alot and made some unfortunate choices also. She made a good life till her end. Sarah's story isn't finised yet, give her a chance.

  18. I'm on to this a bit late but if you haven't already found out - the cost of the cake is 66 euros. I was actually tempted to buy it at the Champs Elysees Laduree and then one of the gorgeous men behind the counter picked it up and boxed it, someone just beat me to it. It was the last one, in the classic Laduree green and was so beautiful. And much smaller than you would think! One day....

  19. Could you please tell me what is inside of that cake on the bottom photo. I am trying to decipher what the flavors are of the innards of the L'aduree cake with rose frosting..Thanks!

    Harvey Wallbanger Cake

1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
    4 eggs
    1/2 cup vegetable oil
    5 fluid ounces Galliano liqueur
    2 fluid ounces vodka
    1/2 cup orange juice
    1 cup confectioners' sugar
    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 10 inch tube pan.
    2. Combine cake mix and pudding mix in a large bowl. Blend in eggs, vegetable oil, 4 ounces Galliano, 1 ounce vodka, and 4 ounces orange juice. Mix batter until smooth and thick and pour into prepared pan.
    3. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Let cake cool in pan for 10 minutes then remove and place on cooling rack. Spoon glaze over cake while it is still warm.

To Make Glaze: Combine the remaining 1 ounce Galliano, 1 ounce vodka, and 1ounce orange juice with the confectioner's sugar and blend until smooth. Spoon glaze over warm cake.

(When I made it, I never made the glaze, but it sounds good.)
    1 cup confectioners' sugar
