Chanel and Dior are Inspired: 18th century style and Marie Antoinette Fashions

We are right in the midst of Haute Couture Fashion week in Paris! Chanel's collection debuted this morning and the Dior collection on Monday. Both collections drew influences from the 18th century, think Petit Trianon, decorative arts and gardens.

Dior inspired by Marie Antoinette's Petit Trianon for Spring 2014 Makeup Collection

Dior Trianon Collection Spring 2014

Dior looks back to the 18th century again for inspiration, this time it is Marie Antoinette's Petit Trianon that has inspired their new makeup collection.  The colors are soft and  glowy - and the details are ornamental and fun, the palette vessel is a bow and the pots are impressed with ribbons.

What do you think of the colors selected for this collection?  I can see the floral, pastoral and decorative arts influence!

Exhibtion: Le XVIII au Goût du Jour/A Taste of the 18th Century

Versailles is hosting a new exhibition: Le XVII au Gout du Jour/ A Taste of the 18th Century.  The exhibition is curated by Olivier Saillard and is on view at Versailles through October 9, 2011.

Saillard shows us how our current fashions are not so far removed from the past, if not by functionally then at least by inspiration.  Contemporary pieces are paired with historic ones, creating a unique flow through the show.  You may find that you will not be comparing old to new. Instead the pieces seem to work together rather than pronounce differences.

This is no new concept here, as we often make comparisons between today's fashion and that of the 18th century.  You will remember the recent post on Christian Louboutin's amazing new campaign and the historical inspired fashion that turned heads at the Royal Ascot.  To view more items from this show (contemporary and historical), visit the exhibition website.

Eye Candy: Incroyables et Merveilleuses

112 years after Marie Antoinette was executed, Christian Dior was born. Connection? Not really but ... he moved to Paris when he was 10, and was rather fashion minded. He started the iconic style of 'figure 8' in the mid century, and really pioneered new fashion for the post war shoppers. I am posting this cocktail dress of his for fun, but what I really want to show you is...this collection!!

I have been in love with these since they came out. The collection is called Incroyables et Merveilleuses, and the pieces are stunning! It is something that any Comtesse or Duchess would pine over, each buy a different piece and giggle over them at 1 am in the gardens. Honestly! I can not even choose a favorite, I like the different little themes in all of them! Click on the image to see the larger more detailed image!

Check out Dior's entire collection here: Just click on the Incroyables et Merveilleuses collection! And I know you would just love to receive a pair of these drop earrings for your next fête!

Fashion du Jour! Literally?!? Dior

I came across these images from Christian Dior's 60th anniversary and had to share! they are finds from the Shoe Goddess. Check out the awesome shape/heel of the shoes! The first pair are total Guillotine Pumps. And if you were so fortunate to purchase one of these grand outfits, besides show everyone your closet, what would you do with it?? Where would you go when you wore it?? I would be totally content prancing around in my house and trying to go to any formal event I could find ;)
